Winston-Salem has been catapulted over the years to the top of national lists of best places to retire. More recently, its reputation as a retirement haven received a boost from Forbes Magazine and Smart Asset.
Forbes placed Winston-Salem on its 2022 list of the 25 top cities for retirees. The last time the city had been featured on that list was in 2020. Smart Asset ranked Winston-Salem the 14th best city for an early retirement on its 2022 list.
Forbes cites a high ratio of physicians per capita, comfortable climate and good air quality, a good economy, no state estate tax or income tax on Social Security, and relatively moderate risk of natural hazards as some of the pros about the Twin City.
Another key factor that influences its attractiveness is the low cost of living, around 19% below the national average. Additionally, Winston-Salem had the lowest median home price of all 25 best cities, at $219,000. This is, according to Forbes, 42% below the national median.
