A Winston-Salem staple, Salem Lake Trail encircles Salem Lake in Salem Lake Park. The trail is one of the most popular locales for exercise in the area, and you can see equestrians along with runners, walkers, and bikers.
The mostly dirt path loops around the lake for a total distance of seven miles and through scenic wooded areas and water views in sections. The trail has mile markers that go counterclockwise starting at the Point parking lot near the playground and picnic areas.
The annual Salem Lake 30K Trail Run is held in the fall. This year, the out-and-back race will take place on September 24, starting at the Marina Building. The race also offers two less challenging options, a 7-mile length event and a 5K length event on the wooded trail. Registration closes at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, 9/21. If you are only looking to sneak a fall color “peep,” however, the richly forested trail provides a great opportunity to take in the vibrant colors of the season along its picturesque stretches of redbuds, red maples, and dogwoods.
