Whether you are taking your children to the playground, exercising, or relaxing outdoors in nature, Winston-Salem offers something for everyone. Here are five of the best parks in the area:

Bethabara Park

Founded in 1753 by German-speaking Moravians, Bethabara was the first European settlement in the North Carolina Piedmont. A National Historic Landmark and Local Historic District, historic Bethabara Park encompasses 183 acres of preserved wildlife, historic buildings and grounds, walking and birding trails, and protected wetlands. Many of the trails at Historic Bethabara Park are temporarily closed due to construction.

Hanes Park

Hanes Park is a public park off Northwest Blvd. in Winston-Salem. The park sits right across from RJ Reynolds High School and Wiley Magnet School and offers tennis courts, baseball fields, a playground, a jogging track, and walking trails. Hanes Park is currently undergoing renovations to help bring it up to code, make it a safer park, and keep this beautiful park going for decades to come.

Quarry Park

Winston-Salem’s new Quarry Park is a sight to behold. The park is built around an old quarry that was in operation from the mid-1920s until the early 1970s. After the quarry shut down, the deep hole created by rock mining filled with water. The former Vulcan quarry property has been improved with walking and bike trails, a restroom draped with crushed rock, and a platform offering views of the quarry, downtown, and nearby mountains. The public restroom tucked under the observation platform at the new Quarry Park is lined with large gravel, not too different from the gravel produced by the old quarry for use in the construction of the nearby Business I-40 and U.S. 52.

Salem Lake

Salem Lake is literally a stone’s throw away from downtown Winston-Salem. Located off Reynolds Park Road, the 375-acre lake is a perfect stop for those seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Salem Lake offers miles of paved and unpaved trails, a playground, restrooms, a fishing pier, and boat rentals to keep the whole family entertained and close to nature.

Washington Park

Washington Park is a public park off Broad Street in Winston-Salem. Once known as Sunnyside Park and Southside Park, the original 17 acres of designated parkland now known as Washington Park has grown to more than 75 acres with shelters, greenways, baseball fields, playgrounds, and a dog park. This park is perfect for active adults, kids who love sports, or young children who can take advantage of the green space and playground.
